I represented Bournemouth University UCU, and spoke about the striking over pay, pensions, workplace conditions, and casualisation.
TUC Womens Conference, February 2020
Samira Ahmed spoke at the conference, and I asked her as it was [then] fifty years since the equal pay act, what advice did she have for activists trying to achieve equal pay for women and BAME workers. She spoke at length about the importance of her union, the NUJ supporting her. Samira urged us all to get the support of male colleagues, ask them the data on pay and remuneration.

Representing the Southern Region at last year’s Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, along with the marvellous Mark Farwell, chair of Southampton Solent University UCU and the Southern Region secretary, we raised our banner in solidarity with all unions. Speaking with Angela Rayner about the relentless, concerted attacks by the media we expressed our solidarity for her and Jeremy Corbyn. It was good to see so many UCU banners in the march. A time to come together in solidarity.

We will submit these motions to the upcoming Congress and Special Conference. Most FE colleges in England started physical on-site opening on 17th August, colleges are due to open their doors to workers and students on Monday 7th September. The UK Government released SAGE backed advice on Saturday 5th September. This advice was long in coming, unfortunately short in substance and four months late.
